Photos: Heads shaved to help 5-year-old Greenport cancer patient

Sam’s Heroes

Local residents known as “Sam’s Heroes” came together Saturday afternoon to shave their heads in solidarity and support of 5-year-old Greenporter Sam Duffy who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last year.

The fundraiser, which was coordinated by Sam’s Heroes and One Love Beach to raise funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, was held at the First & South restaurant in Greenport.

Thirty people agreed to shave their heads to raise money to benefit children battling cancer and $22,000 has been raised so far.

The dining room at First & South was decorated with balloons, photos and a large superhero mural painted by artist Kara Hoblin.

On hand to do the shavings were Maggie Harrigan of Haircuttters located on Love Lane in Mattituck and Heather Baker of Heather’s Salon in Greenport.

Harry Wareing of WEHM radio provided commentary.

Among the brave volunteers to shave their heads were several Southold Town police officers who also showed up bearing gifts for Sam.
