Greenport Village to shortly shutdown power plant Thursday

Greenport Village’s electric system is scheduled to temporarily shutdown at around 3 a.m. Thursday for a state-required test.

The test had been set for last Friday, but was postponed after crews found an issue with the electric system when the village attempted to switch power loads from one transformer to another, which is required during a Demonstrated Maximum Net Capability test. The cause of the problem hasn’t been determined yet.

Customers are advised to take special precautions prior to the test, especially because medical equipment may be affected during the outage.

Village officials had previously said a design flaw in the $5.8 million upgrade of the village’s power plant has prevented it from being able to switch from one transformer to another without first shutting down the system.

According to a previous Suffolk Times report, the Village Board authorized legal action against Genesys Engineering, the company that designed the upgrade, last October. No lawsuit has yet been filed.
