Donald E. Fanning

Lifelong Southampton resident Donald E. Fanning died April 15, 2016, at his home in the Village surrounded by his family. He was 84. 

Don was born July 14, 1931, in Southampton Hospital to Howard L. and Margaret (Malone) Fanning and was educated at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School and Southampton High School.

He later married Barbara Howard of Greenport and together they made their home in Southampton. For 30 years, he worked for the Southampton Village Highway Department and then with the Southampton Village and Southampton Town police departments.

In the community, Don was a 64-year member of the Southampton Fire Department, where he was a former captain of the fire police and second assistant chief. He was also a member of the South Fork Fire Police Association and a communicant of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary R.C. Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Howard Fanning; four daughters, Mary Thomas and her husband, Steve, Dona McKissick and her husband, Jim, Theresa Hunter and Brad Eleazer and Erin Frankenbach and her husband, Jim; a brother Gerald Fanning; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters and four brothers.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, April 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton, where firematic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 22, at Our Lady of Poland R.C. Church, Father Mike Vetrano officiating.
