Orient resident Kathleen Leslie Latham died peacefully April 16 at her home. She was 96.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Jan. 27, 1920, Kathleen was the second child of Kenneth and Elizabeth Moir Leslie.

The Leslie family moved to Montclair, N.J. in the 1930s and Kathleen attended The Lincoln School in New York City, graduating at the age of 16. She then attended Guilford College, where she met her future husband, George Ritchie Latham Jr. They were married in Montclair in May, 1941.

Kathleen taught French, English and math at The Waldorf School in Garden City. Upon retirement, she and Ritchie moved to their summer house in Orient, where she began volunteering at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport.

Kathleen is survived by her four children, David (Linda), Priscilla, James and Zoë; her sister, Rosaleen of Ottawa; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband; her first son, George Ritchie III; her sister, Gloria; her brother, Alexander; her daughter-in-law, Pat and one grandson, Joseph.

The family will receive visitors Friday, April 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A church service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Orient Congregational Church.
