Southold News: Poetry Gallery at Southold Free Library
Hello everyone! I have to do the proud mom/Southold resident thing here. Congratulations to the Southold High School robotics team, Team R.I.C.E. 870.
They placed second in a recent competition at Hofstra and won the engineering award, which qualified them for the world competition in St. Louis, Mo. Many thanks to advisers Chris Schade and Bob Gammon and to the volunteers, mentors and contributors! I’m afraid to mention people specifically for fear of leaving someone out. As I write this, the powers that be are determining how to get this team to St. Louis. Keep an eye out for fundraisers. I am astounded: There isn’t a single birthday to celebrate for Southold residents this column. How can that be? So I dug deep into my Facebook friends — not that deep, but yeah, if you’re Facebook friends with me, your birthday is fair game — and it is with great glee that I ask you to say happy birthday to SHS social worker Jessica Santiago on April 14.
Many wishes for a happy anniversary go out to Vinnie and Louise Tirelli. This wonderful couple celebrates April 11.
Three pieces of library news: April is National Poetry Month and you’re invited to visit the Poetry Gallery and read poems written by local poets of all ages. Arranged by volunteer poet Vivian Eyre, the poems are on exhibit in the community room. There will be a reception Saturday, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. with a reading from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be available.
Poem in your Pocket Day will be celebrated this year on Thursday, April 28. Choose any poem, carry it with you throughout the day and share it with others. Channel your inner bard.
Multimedia pieces by Southold High School students are on exhibit throughout the first and second floors of the library during April. This annual exhibit is curated by art instructor Dan Gosnell. Stop in soon and enjoy the artwork.
The Southold-Peconic Seniors will be running a trip to Quebec and the Isle of Coudres, departing Sunday, May 15, and returning Friday, May 20. Three of the nights will be spent on the Isle of Coudres, with tours of the island and ferries back to Quebec for tours of the city, St. Anne De Beaupre shrine, show entertainment, casino and more. The price is $649 per person, double occupancy, which includes breakfasts, dinners and one lunch, all tours and hotel stays, tax and tips. Thanks to the Southold Fire Department and American Heart Association Training Center, 350 Greenport school district students in grades 7-12 have learned hands-only CPR and how to use an automatic external defibrillator. Chris Manfredi, Roland Grant, Michelle Salmon and Jeff Corazzini trained the students during physical education class. Thanks go out to the P.E. staff — Andrea Manfredi, Luis Morales and Cindy Sepenoski — for their class time and for assisting with training.
