Barbara Adams

Barbara Adams, a longtime resident of Peconic, died April 22, 2016, in Kathmandu, Nepal, two days before her 85th birthday as a result of complications following emergency surgery. For the last 50 years, she had divided her time between the East End and Kathmandu. She enjoyed sailing on the bay and frequently attended services at First Universalist Church in Southold. She had planned to move to Peconic Landing this year.

Ms. Adams was a freelance journalist. She first went to Nepal in 1961 to cover the visit of the Queen of England for an Italian magazine. She fell in love with the country and with Prince Basundhara.

Nepal and Peconic became the emotional centers of her life. She was the author of two books, “Barbara’s Nepal” and “Traditional Bhutanese Textiles,” and numerous articles and columns advocating social reform in Nepalese newspapers. She founded the Barbara Peace Foundation in Kathmandu, which makes an annual award to an anti-corruption activist, and has built housing and schools for villagers in western Nepal.

Ms. Adams was predeceased by her father, Foster Adams, her mother, Fran Adams, and her sister, Jody Adams. She is survived by second cousins Wendy Prellwitz of Peconic and Cambridge, Mass., and Henry Prellwitz of Pittsburgh.
Hindu and Buddhist memorial ceremonies have been held in Kathmandu. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at High House, 7134 Indian Neck Lane, Peconic.
