Bill Olson

Former Greenport resident Bill Olson died at home in Springfield, Va. April 28 from complications following a fall. He was 81. His family moved to Eastern Long Island after World War II , when his father, Dr. Albert William Olson, returned from the war and opened a medical practice on Main Street in his home town of Greenport.

Family members said Mr. Olson loved the area and the sea. After graduating
from the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler, he had a career with the U.S. Navy, serving on-board several ships. At every opportunity he would return to Greenport with his wife and four children to visit family and old friends in the area.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie; his three sons, Steven, Thomas, and James; his sister Helen Hansen of Cutchogue; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Katharine.
