Class of 2016: Valedictorians and Salutatorians

Greenport High School

TLIAM LIEBLEIN

VALEDICTORIAN

GPA: 96.45 (unweighted)

College Plans: Binghamton University

Major: chemistry or physics

An accomplished scholar: Throughout high school, Liam has been on the high honor roll while taking five out of the seven AP classes offered at Greenport. He was inducted into both the National and French National honor societies, attended Boys State in 2015 and earned the National Award of Scholastic Excellence in NJROTC.

Community service: Through his church, Liam has been an altar server, helped feed the hungry and raised money to house the homeless. He also participated in beach cleanups through NJROTC.

“Having lived in the small town of Greenport for most of my life, a sense of community has always been important to me,” Liam said. “Anything I can do to give back to the community helps to strengthen that bond between the members of society and make Greenport a better place to live in.”

A little bit of everything: In addition to those activities, Liam has played soccer since junior high, played percussion in the band, worked on the stage crew and participated in Cyber Patriot, an Air Force program for students interested in careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

Parting words: “Motivation is the most important thing toward being successful in high school. While you can simply get by and pass your classes while doing nothing extracurricular, it will benefit you immensely if you have the motivation to go outside of what is required and into what you desire.”

TROSEMARY VOLINSKI

SALUTATORIAN

GPA: 96.09 (unweighted)

College plans: University of New Haven

Major: criminal justice

Sports star: Rosemary has played soccer since age 4. She’s belonged to numerous teams and won many awards for her skill, including the NYSAPERD Suffolk Zone Award, Coach’s Award, All County and All League recognition and MVP honors. Rosemary was a scholar athlete for both soccer and softball. She hopes to continue playing soccer in college, as either a walk-on varsity player or a member of a club team. Rosemary said sports were her favorite part of school because she got to travel to Southold High School and make friends there as well.

Academic achievements: Beginning in seventh grade, Rosemary has made high honor roll every marking period. She won the Rotary of the Month Award and was the recipient of the Congressional Merit Award at Greenport’s scholarship breakfast.

Community service: Rosemary has volunteered at beach cleanups and food drives through Interact Club and NJROTC. She also assisted in wrapping presents for Wish Factory, which provides local families with gifts during the holidays. “[Wrapping presents] made me realize how lucky I am and how many good people there are in Greenport that are willing to help,” she said.

Parting words: “Enjoy the time you have in high school because it goes by so fast.”
