Cops: Man in rowboat rescued off Mattituck coast

A Mattituck man in a rowboat had to be rescued Sunday night in Long Island Sound after deteriorating weather made it difficult for him to row back to shore, Southold Town police said.

Police received a report of the 26-year-old man, the lone occupant in the boat, struggling against the wind and waves approximately one mile off shore shortly before 8 p.m. Responding officers could see the man amid the poor visibility because of the rain, fog and rough sea.

Southold Town Bay Constables responded by boat from Mattituck and with the assistance of officers from land located the man, who was uninjured, and transported him back to Mattituck. The 12-foot aluminum boat was left to drift, police said, because of the poor conditions.

The United States Coast Guard was notified of the drifting boat, police said.
