Inclement weather delays arrival of the America to Greenport

The arrival of the America to Greenport has been delayed.

Inclement weather Wednesday night pushed back the ship’s departure from Connecticut, according to East End Seaport Museum and Maritime Foundation president Ian Wile, and as of 11:30 a.m. it appeared unlikely it will set sail today.

“The National Weather Service shows that the winds will remain this way until at least 6 p.m.,” Mr. Wile wrote in an email. “At this point, I do not expect the America to leave Connecticut today.”

“The Captain feels strongly that we will be in good shape for tomorrow and looks forward to a sail,” he continued. “Consider this a most maritime reminder that we control a great many things, but wind and sea remain stronger.”

Captain Troy Sears said the ship could set sail around 6 p.m., which would make for a 9 p.m. arrival, but that is dependent on the weather.

“We are very enthusiastic about coming and we wish we could be there now,” he said.

The two-day visit will only be one day now because the ship’s tour schedule can’t be extended, Mr. Sears said.

Mr. Wile urged people to turn out tomorrow to visit the ship.
