Southold Town Board considers amendment to peddlers’ code

In addition to contractors and dumpsters, Southold Town may require peddlers to obtain a town license.

According to town attorney Bill Duffy, local peddler licenses should be required since they’re no longer issued by Suffolk County.

“We were relying on Suffolk County to do background checks and fingerprinting,” Mr. Duffy told the Town Board during Tuesday’s work session. “The county is no longer doing that.”

Mr. Duffy said the next step is for the Town Board to schedule a public hearing to discuss the proposed draft law, which includes having the town police chief review background checks.

In an interview following the meeting, Suffolk County Legislator Al Krupski applauded the town’s effort.

“Once again, for the 10th time in my life, the North Fork has been discovered and I think people see all kinds of opportunities,” he said. “As a quality of life issue, it’s good to hear the town is on top of these things.”
