Longtime Greenport resident James “Jim” Hugh La Bad died of lung cancer July 12 at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. He was 77. 

The son of Annabell (Newkirk) and Merton La Bad Sr. he was born Nov. 8, 1938, in Greenport. He attended Greenport schools and graduated from the high school in 1957, where he received many accolades for basketball and football. He was baptized in the Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion church and later participated in many church youth activities.

Mr. La Bad moved to New York City after graduation and began working as a messenger for Advertisers Company. He worked his was through the company and retired in the early 1990s as an ownership partner. Mr. La Bad lived in Brookyn and returned to Greenport in 1995.

After retirement Mr. La Bad worked in Greenport Floyd Memorial Library and the North Fork Housing Alliance.

Family members said Mr. La Bad enjoyed watching and sharing information about professional sports teams, doing the New York Times crossword puzzles in ink, having fun and spending time with family and friends.

Mr. La Bad is survived by his daughters Cynthia Brooks-Allen of Virgina and Tracey, of Brooklyn; his sons Troy and Kevin of Brooklyn; his ex-wife, Thelma; his siblings Merton Jr. of Dallas, Texas and Bessie La Bad Swann of Accokeek, Md.; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and many other friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his siblings Robert, Carol Leggon and Lorna Catus.

The family received visitors July 16 at Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenport where a funeral service followed.

Arrangements were in the care of Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
