Blotter: Man holding profane sign asked to leave Mitchell Park

A man holding a cardboard sign with a profane message was told to leave Mitchell Park in Greenport Sunday, Southold Town police said.

The man was reportedly “causing a disturbance” by sitting in the park with a handmade cardboard sign that read “F— America,” according to a police report. Police said multiple families with small children were in the area and saw the sign.

The man was asked to leave and complied, police said. Officers said they continued to monitor him throughout the day, according to the report.

• A Hampton Bays man who drove through a stop sign on Main Road in Peconic was arrested for driving while intoxicated Monday night, police said. 

Alexander Mosier, 40, had also failed to maintain his lane of travel when police stopped him around 7:45 p.m., according to a press release.

During the investigation, police determined Mr. Mosier was intoxicated and charged him with misdemeanor DWI, police said.

• A couple allegedly stole a hat from a Greenport Village store Sunday night, according to a police report.

The owner of Not Just Bows on Front Street said a cream-colored hat was taken by a man in a green T-shirt and a blonde woman who left the store and could not be located, according to the report.

• A $700 mountain bike was stolen off the stern of a yacht at Mitchell Park Marina in Greenport last Thursday afternoon, police said.

The captain of the yacht said the black and gray Trek bike was taken off the boat sometime before 2:05 p.m. that day, according to a report. Police said they have no suspects connected to the alleged theft.

• Someone broke into a foreclosed home in Mattituck last month and stole $200 worth of copper wiring, according to a police report filed last Wednesday.

The burglar removed a padlock from the house on Walnut Place and took the pipe from the basement sometime over the last 10 days, officials said. No arrests were made.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
