Chief: Three people injured in Greenport shipyard fire
One person suffered second-degree burns and two other people were injured Friday morning in a fire at Greenport Yacht & Ship Building Company, authorities confirmed Saturday.
The victims, whose names haven’t been released, were working in a ship’s engine room pumping out water when one of the pumps caused a spark and ignited, Greenport Fire Chief Wayne Miller said.
“A pump came on and must have caused a flash and ignited the fumes,” he said. “When I arrived there was smoke pouring out and there was a flame.”
One of the employees was burned over 11 percent of his body, Mr. Miller said.
Stony Brook paramedics took the victim to Stony Brook Hospital where he is being treated in the burn unit, the chief said, adding the other victims were taken to Eastern Long Island for burn treatment. One was held overnight and the other was discharged Friday, Mr. Miller said.
The Southold Fire Department also assisted in the rescue efforts, he added.
A shipyard employee declined comment Saturday.
No other details about the incident was immediately available.
