Eugene N. Mazzaferro

Lifelong Greenport resident Eugene N. Mazzaferro died July 22. He was 91. 

The son of Lena (Picozzi) and Nicolas Mazzaferro, he was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Greenport and attended Greenport High School. He married Gladys (née Watson) at St. Agnes Church in Greenport.

Mr. Mazzaferro served in the U.S. Navy for three years, achieving the rank of aviation radioman second class.

Mr. Mazzaferro was the president of Mazzaferro Brothers mason contractors. His company was responsible for building many of the structures in Greenport, including the post office, the Grants Building, the Little Yankee Shop (now Noah’s), St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Colonial Drug Store and Mr. Roberts Convenience Store, as well as many Greenport home foundations and other buildings.

Mr. Mazzaferro was also one of the founders of Island’s End Golf and Country Club in Greenport, where he constructed the first nine holes of the golf course and served on the board of directors, as past president, and also was a general manager.

He was a 50-year member of the Greenport Fire Department Eagle Hose Company.

Family members said he enjoyed clamming, fishing, his small boat and golfing and loved his friends and the Greenport community.

Predeceased by his wife and his son, Vincent, Mr. Mazzaferro is survived by his daughters, Nancy Schmidt and Nina Mazzaferro of Montgomery, N.Y. and Christine Foster of Cutchogue; his sons Gene and Wayne, both of Greenport; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Monday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A 1:15 p.m. graveside service will follow at St. Agnes R. C. Cemetery in Greenport, officiated by Father Richard Hoerning.

The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to Burton Potter American Legion Post 185, P.O. Box 125, Greenport, NY  11944.
