Former longtime Cutchogue resident Jeffrey Scott Smith of Panama City Beach, Fla. died Aug. 1 at Gulf Coast Hospital in Panama City. He was 69. 

The son of Gloria (Maglin) and Colin Smith, Mr. Smith was born June 4, 1947, in Brooklyn. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1966 and also graduated from numerous classes through the New York State School Boards Association.

He served in the U.S. Army in 1967, achieving the rank of private.

On March 26, 1967, he married Suzanne Hiller in Mattituck.

For 22 years, Mr. Smith worked as a corrections sergeant in Riverhead for the Suffolk County Sherrif’s Office.

Mr. Smith was very involved with local organizations, serving in the Cutchogue Fire Department for 46 years and on the Mattituck-Cutchogue School Board for 19 years. He also worked for Suffolk County BOCES for 20 years, was a 15-year member of the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Park District, where he served as chairman and was a 4th degree knight with the Knights of Columbus.

Family members said Mr. Smith was “a man who was larger than life.”

Predeceased by his granddaughter, Olivia Mae Menard, April 14, 2015, Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Susie; his children, Christina, of Mattituck, Holly Smith Haas (Fred), Barbara Delaney (Matthew), Scott (Angela), Timothy and Jennifer Menard (Chad) and eight grandchildren.

The family received visitors Aug. 6 and 7 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral Mass took place Aug. 8 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Burial with military honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
