Cops: Greenport woman finds prowler peeking in bedroom window

A suspected prowler was seen at a Greenport woman’s bedroom window early last Tuesday, but ran away after realizing the woman was awake, Southold Town police said.

The woman called 911 just before 2 a.m. to report the attempted break-in, police said. She told police she had been sleeping with her bedroom window open on North Street when she heard the sound of the screen being moved.

The woman saw someone reach in and grab her curtains, but the intruder “became alarmed and ran away” when they realized she wasn’t asleep, police said.

Officers at the scene noticed the window screen had been pushed in. Investigators also found that someone had moved a charcoal barbecue from a grilling area and placed it under the victim’s window in order to get inside.

Police said heavy dew on the ground and windows made it difficult to obtain any “credible evidence.” No arrests were reported in connection with the incident.
