Update: Mattituck pizzeria seized for alleged failure to pay taxes reopens

Update 12:30 p.m. Thursday: Michelangelo Pizzeria & Restaurant in Mattituck reopened Thursday, one day after it was seized due to the owner’s failure to pay taxes, according to state records.

Michelangelo Pizzeria & Restaurant in Mattituck was seized by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Wednesday due to the owner’s failure to pay taxes, state records show.

An orange sign posted on the restaurant, which is owned by Michela Corp. LLC, states the property has been seized for nonpayment of taxes and is now in the possession of the state.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance issued two tax warrants issued against the pizzeria last week, one in the amount of $54,228 and another for $49,570, online records show.

A Michelangelo representative described the incident as a “mistake” and said Wednesday the restaurant will reopen later in the day.

Telephone messages left at the pizzeria and for a local attorney listed in the company’s corporate filings were not immediately returned.

The seizure does not affect the Michelangelo locations in Cutchogue and Southold, both of which are owned by different individuals.
