Mattituck News: North Fork alums on the move

The August heat has been record-breaking and so have the crowds around town. Despite U-turns on Love Lane and other obvious signs of visitors, we appreciate the business all the vacationers are bringing to our small town and hope they enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer.

Alex Beebe celebrated turning Sweet 16 with heat lightning shooting across the sky and family and good friends all around. Happy birthday, Alex!

Also celebrating birthdays this month are Justin Aretz, Cheryl Lynch, Kevin Diffley, Billy Birkmier, Brendan Anderson, Jim MacLeod, Jason Zaweski, Kevin Cande and Barbara Smith.

From the North Fork to D.C.: Former Laurel resident Zach Roday was quoted in The New York Times recently in his role as spokesman for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Anyone who knew Zach back in the day knew he was headed for big things.

Speaking of big things, Malcolm Gladwell, author of “The Tipping Point,” recently created a podcast entitled “Revisionist History,” offering reinterpretations of things from the past. Are you wondering why I’d mention him? It’s because Mattituck’s own Jacob Smith works for Mr. Gladwell and is the producer of this unique podcast, which is worth watching. Jacob is another of the North Fork’s finest alums from whom I’m sure we’ll hear more as time goes on.

Summer internships are an important part of college students’ education. This summer, Melissa Hickox did an unpaid internship with the Nassau County DA’s office and Doug Beebe interned in the Manhattan offices of consulting firm Ernst and Young.

The following couples will toast their years together during the next two weeks: Rory and Merri MacNish, Peter and Ellen Kren, Alex and Dimitri Papadopoulos, Eric and Gail Bressler and Pat and Don Feiler. Happy anniversary!

‘Color Greenport’ is a special CAST event coming up this Saturday, Aug. 20, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at American Beech restaurant. A special adult coloring book has been created with black and white drawings that display the personality of Greenport. For the launch, 20 local artists have hand-colored 17” x 11” drawings from this coloring book. All proceeds will be donated to CAST.

Fairy tales do come true. Congratulations to high school sweethearts Tracy Grim and David Martinez on their recent engagement.

September will be here before you know it and your calendar will fill with events you need to remember. If you have a seventh-grader preparing to start junior high, mark your datebook for Tuesday, Sept. 6, when seventh-grade orientation takes place at 7 p.m. All students and parents/guardians are invited to attend.
