Cutchogue News: Fire department’s annual chicken BBQ
As the season slowly moves from summer to fall and Labor Day weekend approaches, families transition from vacation to school days. Children return from camp, community summer programs end, school supply drives are in full swing and parents take their children off to college. It is a time of change when parents have to step back, take comfort in knowing they did a good job, trust that their children have grown into individuals who will make good choices and, last but not least, pray for the best!
I ran into Melissa Cosgrove and it did my heart good to hear that her children are doing well, that they come home to visit and that she’s able to visit them. Melissa’s daughter Jess, Mattituck High School Class of 2006, has graduated from Touro Medical School in California and moved back east, where she is a resident at North Shore Hospital and lives in Queens. Brother Nick, MHS 2009, coaches lacrosse in the city while pursuing a master’s in finance at Pace University, working on certification in public accounting and interning at BDO. Nick and fellow MHS graduate Jackie Berkoski took their friendship to the next level and became a couple. Jackie earned a radiological tech license in phlebotomy from Marymount and lives at home. Nick lives in Queens with a roommate he met through high school friend Matt Karr.
But the news continues: Matt’s roommate is high school friend Katie Barry. Katie’s mom, Kathy, beamed as we connected the dots when she shared that Katie and boyfriend Andrew Kileen met at the University of Dayton and have been together ever since. On July 29, Andrew asked Katie to take her dog, Gracie, for a walk on the beach, where a table with champagne awaited. Only after having first asked Katie’s dad, Vinny, over a beer at a Dayton basketball game did Andrew get down on one knee and propose. Making this “magical night” complete were the couple’s family and friends (including Nick, Jackie and Matt) waiting at Kathy and Vinny’s home to surprise them with an engagement party! Andrew teaches 6-12 grade band in Brooklyn, where he lives with his brother and best friend. Katie’s living in Manhattan, where she teaches sixth-grade special education. The couple plans to be married in the summer of 2018. Congratulations and God bless!
Congratulations to ex-chief and commissioner Drew McCaffery of the Cutchogue Fire Department, who has been elected president of the Suffolk County Parade and Drill Team Captains Association. Drew has served the organization in many capacities throughout his years of involvement in the Panthers drill team. He is the first member from a local department to hold this position. The CFD chiefs, officers and members, and the community, offer congratulations and wish him the best of luck in his new position.
Speaking of the fire department, the annual CFD chicken barbecue, “a summer tradition for 59 years,” is on for this Saturday, Aug. 27. Call the firehouse today at 631-734-6907 to find out if you can still get a ticket.
