Cops: Wrong-way driver charged with DWI following accident

A drunken driver caused an accident on Route 48 after driving the wrong direction in Peconic, Southold Town police said.

Police received multiple calls of a driver operating a vehicle westbound in the eastbound lanes of Route 48 around 9 p.m. Friday. The unlicensed, wrong-way driver was involved in an accident that injured the other car’s driver and passenger. They both received minor injuries and were treated at the scene by the Southold Fire Department, police said.

Police arrested Manuel DeJesus Masin Perez, 23, of Peconic, and charged him with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated as well as charges for the unlicensed operation and driving the wrong way, police said.

Mr. Masin Perez held overnight for arraignment, police said.
