NWS: Temps to reach 100 degrees this weekend

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory warning for this weekend, predicting heat index values of around 100.

The NWS warned of “oppressive heat and humidity” until around 7 p.m. Saturday night. During this time, the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like 100 degrees, with the highest heat around mid-to-late afternoon both Friday and Saturday, the NWS said. Portions of western Long Island are under an excessive heat watch and excessive heat warning, the NWS said.

The combination of the higher heat and humidity will lead to an increased risk of heat related health issues, the NWS said, adding that it’ll cause greater problems for the elderly, people working outdoors, heat sensitive individuals and those with chronic health problems such as lung and heart disease.

Homes without air conditioning risk seeing higher temperatures indoors than those outside, the NWS cautioned.

Residents are advised to check on vulnerable neighbors, friends and family members and take frequent breaks in a shaded area if working outdoors.

Temperatures are expected to remain high Sunday and Monday as well.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible after noon today, which could produce heavy rainfall, the NWS said.
