Charles “Chub” Henry Nintzel Jr.

Charles “Chub” Henry Nintzel Jr. passed away Sept. 8 at Pine Lake Health Center in Carthage, N.C., after a long battle with dementia. 

Born in Flushing, N.Y., Oct. 19, 1927, he was the son of Charles and Margaret Nintzel.

He graduated from Bayside High School in 1945, was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947 and earned his “Hazardous Duty” stripes with the military police in San Francisco keeping returning World War II troops in line. He attended North Carolina State University’s textile school and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in textiles. His career included positions with Burlington Industries and Woodward Baldwin.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy {“Dos”); daughter, Greta; and son, Charles. His only brother, Lloyd, passed away last year.

Chub played basketball in high school and football with the Flushing Robins. His great love was sailing in Peconic Bay, at the East End of Long Island. He raced Comets in the summer at Mattituck Yacht Club and Penguins in the winter at Sea Cliff Yacht Club. His passion for racing was strong. Once, sailing with his new bride, after spying another sailboat and preparing to challenge the captain, his wife asked, “Can’t we just have a pleasant little sail?” He promptly dropped her ashore and sailed off to defeat his foe. He also crewed on larger sailboats and catamarans, racing on Long Island Sound as well as in New Jersey and Florida.

Chub enjoyed fishing and clamming, preparing feasts of bluefish, weakfish and stuffed clams for friends and relations all summer long. He taught a host of neighborhood children, including his own, how to swim, snorkel, sail small boats, water ski and enjoy and respect the sea.

An avid woodworker, Chub built several sailboats and dinghys during his sailing days. He also built two wooden kayaks and a strip-built canoe and tackled any home repair or remodeling project with skill and finesse.

He and his wife were members of North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue for 29 years. When they built a home in Whispering Pines in 1996, they joined Whispering Pines Country Club and were members for 17 years. Chub was also a club board member.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Trinity Christian Fellowship in Pinehurst, N.C. Interment will take place in Mattituck at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
