Thomas Oliver Monsell

Lifelong Greenport resident Thomas O. Monsell died Nov. 1. He was 83.

The son of Harry Monsell and Amy (Prince) Monsell, he was born Aug. 26, 1933, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He graduated from Greenport High School and attended Ithaca College and SUNY Albany.

Mr. Monsell worked at Lindenhurst High School as an English teacher. He published several books and wrote book and theater reviews for several publications in New York City.

He was a member of Stirling Historical Society and the Mayflower Descendants. Family members said he enjoyed reading and attending theatrical performances.

Mr. Monsell was predeceased by his brothers, Richard, James and George and is survived by two nieces, a nephew, three grandnieces and three grandnephews.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Nov. 4, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Ben Burns. Burial will follow at Sterling Cemetery.
