Lifelong Greenport resident Robert Earle White died Dec. 28 at his home. He was 90. 

The son of Washington and Grace (Seaman) White, he was born March 2, 1926, in Greenport.

Mr. White graduated from Greenport High School. He served in the U.S. Army for four years, achieving the rank of sergeant.

He married Lillian Santacroce in July 1948 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.

For 50 years, Mr. White owned White’s Hardware Store in Greenport.

Mr. White was a member of many organizations in Greenport, including Greenport Fire Department Relief Hose Company, where he was a 70-year member and ex-chief; Stirling Historical Society; the Railroad Museum of Long Island, where he was involved with refurbishing the caboose; Burton Potter American Legion Post 185; Floyd Memorial Library, where he was a past president and Eastern Long Island Hospital, where he was a past board member. He also previously served as trustee for the Village of Greenport.

Family members said Mr. White enjoyed photography and reading the weather in addition to local history and his civic involvement.

Predeceased by his wife and his brothers, Benjamin and Kenneth, Mr. White is survived by his sons, Robert Jr. of Hayes, Va. and David, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his daughter, Marilyn White Corwin of Greenport; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Dec. 30 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, where a firematic service will took place. A funeral Mass was held Dec. 31 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, officiated by Father Richard Hoerning. Cremation will be private.
