Update: Woman accused of stealing $35K from bank customer released

A woman accused of stealing more than $35,000 while she worked at a local bank was arrested on a felony charge in California, according to a Southold Town police press release issued Thursday.

Sara Hando, 28, stole money from a customer’s account while she was “employed at a bank in Southold Town between 2012 and 2013,” the release states. On Thursday, police declined to identity Ms. Hando’s former employer. According to Ms. Hando’s LinkedIn profile, she worked at Capital One Bank in Southold during that time.

A Capital One Bank spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Ms. Hando was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department at her home in Los Angeles, officials said. A Suffolk County grand jury handed down an indictment June 18 charging her with third-degree grand larceny, officials said.

The Suffolk County Police Fugitive Squad transported her to the Southold Town Police Department for processing and she was then turned over to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to await arraignment, the release states.

Ms. Hando pleaded not guilty Thursday afternoon during her arraignment before Judge Fernando Camacho in Suffolk County Criminal Court in Central Islip and was released on her own recognizance, officials said.

Her attorney, Jonathan Manley of Hauppauge, said they’ve been working with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office for about three weeks since Ms. Hando was arrested in California and she waived her rights to formal extradition proceedings.

“We’ve been working diligently with the DA’s office since we were notified of these charges to resolve the situation quickly and fairly,” Mr. Manley said.
