James Robert Day of Kings Park, son of Overton Day of Peconic and the late Cindy Ebbrecht, died Dec. 29, 2017, at St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center in Smithtown after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 10, 1967, at Fort Belvior, Va.
Growing up, James was always an outdoors type and thoroughly enjoyed the sports and activities available where he grew up, mostly Germany and upstate New York as an “army brat.” He was always active in fishing, skiing, hunting and snowmobiling, then later took an interest in cars as so many young men do.
His venture into adulthood was just underway when he suffered a serious brain injury in a workplace accident in 1987. That injury left him permanently disabled and unable to live an independent life. James’s mother, Cindy, served as his primary caretaker until she passed several years ago. Since 2014, James had been a resident at St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park.
James is survived by his father, Overton; stepmother, Jayne; sister, Sasha Shultz of Maryland and brother, Chris Perrin of Virginia.
The family will receive visitors Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 to 11 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Cutchogue Cemetery. A reception will follow at a local restaurant.
The family requests that memorial donations in James’s name be made to the Brain Trauma Foundation. The foundation supports research to help those who suffer brain injuries lead productive and independent lives. They request that donations be made online at braintrauma.org.
