Jill Griffing Muir

Jill Griffing Muir of Orient died Jan. 4 in Orient. She was 75.

Jill was born in Greenport on Nov. 5, 1942, to Irma (King) and George Griffing Muir. She grew up in East Marion, attending the old two-room schoolhouse and graduating from Greenport High School in 1960. She attended Adelphi University in Garden City and then Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City.

After several years as a legal secretary in Manhattan, Greenport and San Francisco, Jill went to work for Suffolk County Probation Department, where she remained for over 40 years, retiring in 2008.

Jill was a well-known yard sale buff scouring the neighborhoods weekly and for many years, holding a big sale at her home in Orient, overlooking the causeway. She also indulged a lifelong passion for the movies by amassing a large film collection, to which she devoted many hours of cataloging and viewing.

Jill is survived by her son, Jonathan Muir, of Holbrook and stepsiblings, William E. Park, David M. Park and Susan Park Utz.

A memorial service took place Jan. 13 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
