Angela Klavas

Angela Klavas of Southold and Beechhurst, N.Y., passed away Jan. 31. She was 90 years old, the beloved wife of Gus C. Klavas for 51 years and the loving mother of Kathryn and TJ Bucci Jr. and Peter and Jill Klavas of Southold. She is the cherished grandmother of Christopher, Angela and William Bucci and Angelica, Gus and Anthony Klavas. She was predeceased by her three siblings George Alexandritis, Alexandra Marmarellis and John Alexandritis.

Angela was born in Astoria, N.Y. May 19, 1927, to Basil and Katina Alexandritis.  She graduated from Hunter College with a Bachelor of Arts in education and a minor in economics. She held two master’s degrees in primary and secondary education and after teaching sixth grade for 30 years in New York City, she received her Doctorate in Education and Professional Degree from St. John’s University in Jamaica, N.Y. She then became an adjunct assistant professor of education at St. John’s University and assistant director of the Learning Styles Network where she taught graduate students and mentored doctoral candidates.

Angela published and consulted on teaching methods nationally and internationally and wrote a book entitled “The Stories Behind Famous American Sayings” in 1965, published by Carlton Press. Angela loved being a teacher and was very proud of the students’ lives she touched. One student who became a pediatric general and thoracic surgeon wrote her years later to say “you pushed me to be better than I thought that I could be and the confidence that you enabled in me has followed along for the last 32 years.”

In November 2010, after 35 years of living in Southold as part-time residents, Gus and Angela moved to Southold full-time. Angela loved her family and was very proud of her six grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, music, reading and spending time helping with the bookkeeping for Anchor Electronic Distributor Corp., named and established by her husband Gus, and now owned and operated her son, Peter.

A mass was held Feb. 2 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Flushing, with entombment at St. Michael’s Cemetery in East Elmhurst. A 40-day memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Sunday, March 11, at Saints Anargyroi, Taxiarchis and Gerasimos Greek Orthodox in Greenport.

Donations may be made to the Southold Fire Department/EMS, 55135 Main Road, Southold, NY 11971.
