Southold Blotter: South Carolina man arrested for possession in Greenport

Anthony Carroll, 18, of Summerville, S.C., was arrested in Greenport last Wednesday for fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, according to Southold Town police.

Officers were on patrol in the area near the Third Street  basketball courts around 6:10 p.m. when an odor of marijuana was detected, police said. Mr. Carroll produced 10 bags containing over an ounce of marijuana, officials said.

• Gary McVeigh, 43, of Port Jefferson was arrested in Mattituck Saturday on Route 48 near Shirley Road for driving while intoxicated, a felony, according to police.

• Jeanine Velazquez, 40, of Shelter Island was arrested in Southold near Hortons Lane on Route 48 on Sunday around 12:30 p.m. for driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, police said.

• A Marlboro, N.J., man fell asleep at the wheel while driving eastbound on Route 48, causing him to cross over into the westbound lane and drive off the roadway onto the grass. The vehicle then struck a tree, causing it to flip on its side, police said. The car then struck a PSEG pole, the report states.

The man was able to get out of the car on his own and did not sustain any major injuries, but was still transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital to get checked out around 1:15 a.m. Monday, police said.

• A school bus and a car were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Route 25 and Cox Lane in Cutchogue Monday around 2:50 p.m. when another car driven by a Southold man was unable to stop in time and struck the car in the rear, police said. That vehicle then rolled into the school bus and hit it, police said.

• An East Marion man reported his bike stolen in Greenport sometime between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Friday, after he left it unattended, police said. It was valued at about $1,500, the report states.

• A Greenport Village woman reported that a propane tank and a plastic garbage can, valued at about $80, were stolen from her residence last Monday, according to a report.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
