Memorial Day parades and services in Riverhead and Southold towns

The red, white and blue of the American flag will fly high on the North Fork Monday, May 28, as local parades and ceremonies are held in observance of Memorial Day.

The following is schedule of events honoring the holiday:

Saturday, May 26

9 a.m.: A flag placement ceremony will be held at Calverton National Cemetery.

Monday, May 28

7:30 a.m.: Orient’s Memorial Day parade begins at Orient firehouse, 23300 Main Road, and travels down Tabor Road en route to the World War I memorial near the yacht club, where wreaths will be laid and prayers will be said. The parade continues up Village Lane, stopping at other monuments, including the Civil War monument at the head of the street, before returning to the firehouse, where refreshments will be served.

8 a.m.: The annual Memorial Day dock service will be held in Greenport. An Honor Guard, Greenport Village officials, veterans and Boy Scouts will gather on Adams Street (behind The Arcade) at 7:45 a.m. for an 8 a.m. step-off. The parade will march to the Railroad Dock for a service. Refreshments will follow at Third Street firehouse. Rain or shine.

10 a.m.: A Memorial Day parade hosted by the Combined Veterans of Riverhead begins at the corner of Pulaski Street and Osborn Avenue. It proceeds to World War I monument, St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church Cemetery, Riverhead Cemetery, the World War II monument and St. Isidore R.C. Church Cemetery.

10 a.m.: American Legion Post 803 will host its Memorial Day Parade in Southold. The route begins at the intersection of Boisseau Avenue and the Main Road and ends at the Legion hall, where hot dogs and soda will be served. At 10:10 a.m., there will be a 10- to 15-minute pause for a ceremony at the gazebo on the corner of Youngs Avenue and Main Road.  

Before the parade, at 7:30 a.m., a Color Guard will lay wreaths at the World War I monument next to the American Legion. They will then proceed to the monument at Southold Free Library, the triangle monument and the Peconic School monument before joining the parade. 

1 p.m.: A Memorial Day flag-laying ceremony will take place at Calverton National Cemetery in the assembly area located at 210 Princeton Blvd.
