Town seeks input about traffic

In an ongoing effort to find ways to alleviate seasonal traffic that crowds North Fork roadways, Southold town officials plan to meet with local business owners.

Councilman Bill Ruland organized a traffic forum in February that included Riverhead Town, county and state officials. The idea to meet with businesses was a next step determined at the meeting.

“Our goal throughout the whole process was what was the next thing? And the next thing is we’re going to engage the business community in our town and listen to what they have to say about the traffic issues,” Mr. Ruland said.

Mr. Ruland said that, even after reaching out twice to participants, no comment or feedback was received on the minutes of the February forum. Since no additional input was received, he said, “We’re on our own, and we’ll do the best we can.”

NEW STOP SIGNS OFFICIAL

New stop signs will be placed at Old Sound Avenue in Mattituck, westbound and eastbound, where the roadway meets Westphalia Avenue, according to a local law the Southold Town Board approved Tuesday.

The stop signs are meant to improve pedestrian and driver safety. The board has recently discussed the need to slow traffic coming off Main Road near Love Lane in response to concerns raised by residents.
