Daniel S. O’Connell

Daniel S. O’Connell of Southold, beloved husband, father and grandfather of seven, passed away July 18.  He was 72 years old.

Dan was born in Long Island City to Henrietta and Joseph O’Connell.  He was raised in Astoria and received his MBA from St. John’s University.  After serving in the army during the Vietnam War, Dan married Elaine Castagna.   They celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary this year.  They made a home in Clifton Park, N.Y., where they raised two daughters, Danielle and Stephanie.  Dan spent his career working for the Small Business Administration and the Small Business Development Center in Albany.  Dan and Elaine moved to Southold after his retirement, where Dan enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his grandchildren.  Dan became fast friends with everyone he met and will be remembered for his storytelling and sharp sense of humor.

Dan is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughters Danielle and Stephanie; their spouses; and seven grandchildren: Connor, Cailin, Declan, Liam, Kevin, Madelyn and Mikayla.

The family will receive visitors today, July 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. American Legion services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m., officiated by Father John Barrett.

The family will also receive visitors on Sunday, July 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route Nine, Clifton Park, N.Y. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 23, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church of Crescent, 86 Church Hill Rd. in Halfmoon, N.Y. Interment with U.S. Army honors will follow at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.

Memorial donations to the Addictions Care Center of Albany, Inc., 90 McCarty Ave., Albany, NY 12202; www.theacca.net would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
