Cops: Two people airlifted following crash in Mattituck

UPDATE, July 24: A Mattituck man crashed into a Florida woman last Wednesday when he was trying to make a left turn from the westbound lane of Route 48 onto Mill Lane in Mattituck, but failed to yield to the right of way of the woman who was going eastbound on Route 48, the report states.

The man said there were large construction barrels and heavy dust from road work, so he did not see the woman coming, causing him to strike the rear passenger side, according to Southold Town Police.

Two people were being airlifted following a two-car crash in Mattituck Wednesday afternoon, according to the Mattituck Fire Department.

Their conditions are not clear.

A sedan and pickup truck collided at the Route 48 and Mill Lane intersection shortly before 3:30 p.m. Rescue crews set up a landing zone at Mattituck High School for a Suffolk Police medevac to transport the people in the sedan to Stony Brook University Hospital.

The status of the pickup driver was not immediately clear.

One eastbound lane remained open as rescue crews cleared the scene. Traffic was closed off from Route 25 north to Mill Lane.
