Football: Porters snap 10-game skid in style

Now that’s how to break a losing streak.

The Greenport/Southold/Mattituck high school football team had waited long enough for a win, so the Porters made the most of it.

Eighty years to the day since the infamous 1938 hurricane blasted Greenport, the Porters showed they have some punch of their own. Greenport picked up its first win in two years, snapping a 10-game losing streak by walloping Hampton Bays, 52-0, Friday night at Dorrie Jackson Memorial Field in Greenport.

How did the Porters (1-2 Suffolk County Division IV) do it?

A heavy dose of Ahkee Anderson magic helped, not to mention excellent play by the offensive line and a rock-solid defense that limited Hampton Bays (1-2) to 105 yards of offense.

Anderson was clearly feeling it. The junior quarterback/cornerback had two touchdowns and two sacks before the first quarter had even ended and finished the game with three touchdowns.

Anderson opened the scoring with a 10-yard run (followed by Isaiah Johnson’s run for two points) 6 minutes and 6 seconds into the game.

Hampton Bays’ next possession ended with Anderson returning Kevin McNamara’s punt 65 yards for a TD.

Anderson’s third TD of the night was a remarkable escape act. He somehow managed to free himself from the grasp of a Hampton Bays defender, avoid others, dart to the right and glide down the sideline for a 68-yard run in the second quarter. He then passed to Brandon Clark for the two-point conversion.

Before the first half ended, Greenport tacked on two more TDs, a 28-yard run by Tyrus Smiley on a pitch from Anderson and a 5-yard burst through the middle by Johnson. Johnson and Clark followed up those TDs with two-point conversions, making the score 38-0 by halftime.

Anderson had 88 yards from three carries, Smiley 84 yards from seven carries and Johnson 56 yards from eight runs — all in the first half.

Greenport added to its lead in the second half with a 2-yard TD run by Shane Kollen and a 34-yard interception return by Jorge Torrento.

Greenport’s fine play even extended to its new kicker, Danny Breen. In addition to kicking two extra points, the freshman booted five consecutive touchbacks.

On the defensive end, Rob Lechner made seven tackles, including a pair of sacks, for Greenport.

Greenport attempted only two passes, none in the second half, and totaled 278 rushing yards from nine ball carriers.

Hampton Bays’ Quinn Smith ran 17 times for 99 yards, but 13 running plays by the Baymen went for negative yardage.

Having ended one streak, the Porters would like to start another. A victory over Southampton at home next Friday night would bring them their first winning streak in quite a while.
