William H. Price

William H. Price Sr.

William H. Price, former president of McMann Price Agency, died Sept. 16 at the age of 100 at his home in Jupiter, Fla.

He was the second son of Irving and Irene (Wood) Price. He graduated from Greenport High School and the University of Pennsylvania. He married Helen “Betty” Crafts in 1950. They had three children.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II on the USS San Francisco. He then returned to Greenport and married. He was one of the proprietors of the Sky Way Drive-In, the only drive-in movie in the town of Southold.

He then purchased an insurance agency that became McMann Price Agency, which he ran for 53 years.

He was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Greenport American Legion, the Greenport Men’s Club, the Chinese Yacht Club, the Junior Order of Mechanics, the Suffolk County Charter Revision Commission, the Board of Education for BOCES, the Greenport Board of Education and Greenport Fire Department’s Star Hose Co. He was also a trustee at Southold Savings Bank, a director of North Fork Bank and a CYO basketball coach. Family members said he loved boating, fishing and his family. He volunteered at the VA hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla., until he was 95.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, and his brother, Llewellyn. He is survived by his son, William Jr. (Lillian); daughters Judith (Richard) Hamm of Sundance, Wyo., and Susan (Bruce) Anderson of Southold; grandchildren William Donnelly, Robyn Donnelly, Ashley Price, Elizabeth Anderson and Robert Anderson; and great-grandchild, Vayda Occhiogrosso.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A church service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport. Interment will follow at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.
