Update (3:30 p.m.): The teenager shot early Friday morning is listed as stable, alert and responsive, according to a message from Superintendent David Gamberg.

“[The family] expressed their gratitude for our support and respect for their privacy,” he wrote. “Our faculty and counselors have been available and working with students throughout the day. They will remain available in the upcoming days. Please contact them with any questions or concerns about your child’s reaction to this situation. The Southold Town Police have informed us that the incident was not school related, did not occur on school grounds and in no way jeopardizes school safety.”

Original Post: A Greenport High School student was the victim of a shooting early Friday morning and four suspects are currently in custody, according Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley.

The student, who is 18, was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of injuries that are not expected to be life threatening, the chief said.

Greenport Superintendent David Gamberg issued a statement to the school community Friday morning confirming that the student is under medical care.

“We have been reassured by the police that this incident does not jeopardize our building safety,” Mr. Gamberg wrote.

The district conducted emergency crisis meetings with staff before school began this morning, he said. Counseling support is being made available to “any and all students and staff in the district.”

“We will keep all students, families, and staff informed of any other relevant facts as they become available,” he said.

Chief Flatley said the shooting was not random and suspects were apprehended immediately afterward.

“We have a lot to sift through from the incident,” he said.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is assisting in the investigation. The shooting occurred in the Lakeside Garden Apartments.

Police received a 911 call just past 1 a.m. from a caller who heard a gunshot and saw several men running toward a black sedan, according to dispatcher’s audio archived through Broadcastify.

Police had the suspects within custody less than 10 minutes later. The victim suffered the gunshot wound in the stomach.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned this afternoon.
