Here are the headlines across the North Fork for Monday, Jan. 21:

The North Fork avoided the heavy snowfall forecast for this past weekend, but there’s no escaping today’s chill.

The high temperature will reach just 15 degrees today and will feel below zero with the wind chill.

A wind advisory has been issued for the area through 10 p.m. tonight with gusts expected to reach up to 39 miles per hour.

Drivers should practice extreme caution today as Sunday’s rain and today’s cold temperatures will make for icy conditions across the region.

The high temperature is not expected to rise above freezing until Wednesday, when the warmer weather is expected to bring with it two days of rain that is likely to last through Thursday.

Private First Class Garfield Langhorn of Riverhead will be recognized by Congressman Lee Zeldin at noon today at the post office named for the Medal of Honor recipient.

The ceremony comes just days after the 50th anniversary of Langhorn’s death.

The Congressman is also expected to announce the PFC Garfield M. Langhorn Memorial Semipostal Stamp to Benefit our Veterans Act of 2019 to create a semipostal stamp in his honor. A semipostal stamp is sold at a premium price, which covers the cost of postage and donates the excess money to a nationally recognized cause. The excess money from the PFC Langhorn stamp would go to the Supportive

Services for Veteran Families, a Department of Defense program, that offers assistance to very low-income veteran families who are in the process of transitioning to permanent housing, according to the Congressman.

Today’s ceremony will take place at the Private First Class Garfield M. Langhorn Post Office at 1210 W Main St in Riverhead
