Town looks to demolish condemned Southold home

A Hyatt Road home in Southold may be demolished by Southold Town officials after it was condemned by the building department in December.

According to senior building inspector John Jarski, the roof is severely damaged, internal ceilings have collapsed due to water intrusion, structural beams are weakened and mold was found throughout the structure, located at 2875 Hyatt Road.

“There is an imminent chance of collapse within the near future,” Mr. Jarski reported at a work session Tuesday.

He said the damage to the home is “irreparable,” and should therefore be demolished.

Town attorney Bill Duffy said that attempts to reach the property owner have been unsuccessful.

“It has been a year and a half of trying to get the property cleaned up,” Mr. Duffy said.

Mr. Jarski said the building has not been inhabited since at least February 2017.

Robin Burner Daleo, an attorney and property management guardian for property owner Carla Block, said she is unable to do anything with the home without further direction from the court.

“I understand if there’s a safety issue, the town has to do what needs to be done,” she said.

In the meantime, Ms. Daleo suggested a fence to deter people from entering the property, which board members agreed was an important safety measure.

Despite the fence, Supervisor Scott Russell said the town would proceed with the demolition process. “We’re still going to move at breakneck speed to get this done as quickly as possible,” he said.
