Here are the headlines across the North Fork for Friday, Jan. 18:

Remember when we were calling this a mild winter?

Well you’ll likely soon forget you ever did.

Not only did a light snowfall drop less than an inch of snow overnight, but a hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the weekend.

Here’s what the National Weather Service is saying about the pending weather event:

“A powerful winter storm will impact the area Saturday night into Sunday. There is the potential for 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet with up to a glaze of ice. Temperatures will rapidly fall Sunday afternoon and evening, creating the potential for a flash freeze. If this occurs, it will create a sheet of ice on any untreated surfaces. In addition minor to moderate coastal flooding will be possible, mainly with the Sunday morning high tide cycle. Dangerous wind chills around 10 below zero are possible Sunday night into Monday morning.”

As for today, expect a cloudy day after the mix of snow and rain subsides around 8 a.m. There’s a forecasted high of 42 degrees with a low of 25 tonight.

The Town of Riverhead announced Friday morning that it has sent out crews to salt the road during today’s weather event and the supervisor is urging motorists to use caution during the morning commute.
