Harold P. Schwerdt

Longtime Southold resident Harold P. Schwerdt died Jan. 9 at East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quogue. He was 98.

He was born Jan. 15, 1920, in Queens, N.Y., to Mary (Stoessel) and John Schwerdt. Mr. Schwerdt was a high school graduate. He married Loretta Reilly June 1, 1943, in Queens.

Mr. Schwerdt served in the U.S. Air Force and made a career at New York Telephone as a building industrial consultant for over 40 years.

He was honored as the oldest prisoner of war by New York State and was a two-time Purple Heart recipient. He was a commander of Southold American Legion and a lifetime member of the American Legion.

His family said he enjoyed bowling, golf, singing in the St. Patrick R.C. Church choir in Southold and was the head of bingo at the American Legion.

Mr. Schwerdt was predeceased by his wife and his daughter Patricia Oster. He is survived by his daughter Marianne Sawicki of Laurel and three grandchildren, Ashley Blados of Chesapeake, Va., and Kaitlin and Nicholas Oster.

Visitors will be received Sunday, Jan. 13, from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, with by Msgr. Joseph Staudt officiating. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
