NWS: Wind gusts up to 50 mph, flash flooding expected Thursday

At least it’s not snow.

A storm sweeping across the area Thursday is expected to bring heavy rain, winds and flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

A wind advisory went into effect at 9 a.m. and will remain until 6 p.m. South or southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected with gusts up to 50 mph, which can cause downed limbs, trees and power lines. Scattered power outages could be expected. The winds can make driving difficult as well, especially for high profile vehicles, in open areas and on elevated roads and bridges. Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution.

Rain will become heavy at times in the morning with the potential for heavy downpours into the early afternoon, according to the NWS. A total of 1 1/4 to 2 1/4 inches of rain is expected with locally higher amounts possible. Flash flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, as well as small streams will be possible, according to the NWS.

Vulnerable coastal locations along Peconic Bay, at Orient Point and in Riverhead are at risk for coastal flooding. Brief minor flooding of vulnerable waterfront and shorelines locations is expected.

Breaking waves around Orient Point are expected around 2 to 4 feet, resulting in beach flooding and erosion. Minor damage is possible to dune structures.

The coastal flooding will coincide with high tides, which in Orient is at 12:35 p.m. A high tide in South Jamesport is expected at 2:26 p.m., according to the NWS.

After brutal cold Monday, the temperature is expected to be near a high of 56 Thursday afternoon.
