Southold Town awarded grant for new courtroom

The Southold Town Justice Court has been awarded $19,289 in grant funding through the Justice Court Assistance Program, court director Leanne Reilly announced Tuesday.

The funding will cover expenses for furniture for the new courtroom, which will eventually relocate to the old Capital One building on the corner of Youngs Avenue.

The town has 180 days to spend the funds, Ms. Reilly said, long before they will move into the new building.

If the money isn’t spent, the court system could grant an extension or could ask for the funding back, she said.

“If it’s not spent, I can’t put in for the new grant so we’re sort of in a time warp there,” she said.

The board agreed that the furniture should be purchased and kept either at a town-owned facility or in a rented storage unit.
