Southold Blotter: Greenport man drives onto sidewalk when pulled over

A Greenport man was arrested for driving while intoxicated early last Sunday morning after an officer noticed him failing to maintain his lane, according to police.

Angel Colon, 48, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound along Front Street in Greenport around 2:30 a.m. An officer observed him cross over the solid double yellow lines. When Mr. Colon pulled over, he allegedly drove onto the curb and sidewalk.

He admitted he had been drinking, police said, and failed a field sobriety test. He was charged with DWI and several traffic violations.

• A Greenport Village woman called police around 10:21 p.m. last Tuesday to report a suspected overdose in Greenport. When police arrived at the scene, they determined that a Riverhead woman had overdosed on heroin and found that a Greenport man had used two Narcan nasal sprays on the woman, according to reports.

The Riverhead woman, police said, was alert and conscious when they arrived. She was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital, police said. 

• A Southold woman reported to police around 10:05 a.m. Saturday that a Southold man was in her home in violation of an order of protection. The man was found sleeping in the bedroom and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

• A Greenport woman notified police last Monday afternoon that another woman allegedly stole 18 packs of Dove soap bars, valued at $72.15. After police responded, the caller opted not to press charges. The suspect agreed to not return to the location, according to police.

• Two Greenport women contacted police at around 3:45 p.m. last Monday to report that an unknown person was dumping items into the woods near the intersection of Willow Drive and Homestead Way in Greenport. Police said the items — two black tires, a yellow T-shirt, some string and a plastic container — were found alongside a receipt with a Riverhead man’s name on it. The Riverhead man told police the items did at one time belong to him, but that he had sold the vehicle the items were located in. The man said he did not have contact information for the vehicle owner, but that he would remove the items that once belonged to him. According to police, the town’s highway department was notified to remove the remaining items.

• A vehicle overturned after a two-car crash in Mattituck last Friday night, police said. The driver of a Nissan pickup heading north on Elijahs Lane failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the passenger side of a Mercedes sedan traveling east on Route 48 at about 10:45 p.m. The driver of the Nissan told police her brakes “locked up” as she approached the intersection.

Neither driver, both of whom were evaluated by Mattituck Fire Department members, sustained serious injuries.

• A Greenport woman reported around 7:30 p.m. Sunday that her powder blue bicycle, valued at $200, had been stolen from the sidewalk outside Agave restaurant in Greenport, where she was dining at the time. A witness reported seeing a middle-aged white man in a light colored pickup place the bicycle in the bed of his truck. Police have no further information on the truck or the suspect at this time. 

• At around 7:33 p.m. Sunday, a Mattituck woman contacted police to report that two windows at the rear of her summer residence had been damaged by a BB gun. Damage to the windows was valued at $100. The woman, who was opening her home for the summer season, said she is only looking to have the windows repaired. 

Police interviewed the woman’s neighbor who claimed he had previously owned a BB gun, but sold it some time ago. The man told police that he had friends over recently and that they were all in his backyard. Police advised the man to reach out to his friends and inquire whether any of them might have caused the damage while visiting. The man agreed to follow up with his friends, police said.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
