Linda J. Wheeler

Linda J. Wheeler of Aquebogue and formerly of Southold died Sunday, April 3, 2022. She was 74.

Linda was born Aug. 7, 1947, in Dearborn, Mich., to Josephine (née Dowdell) and Richard H. Darnell. She was one of three children. In her early years she was raised in Massapequa, N.Y. and would move to Southold with her family in 1960. She would go on to graduate from Southold High School with the class of 1965. After high school, she attended Claremont Secretarial School in Hicksville, N.Y.

On May 6, 1967, she married the love of her life, the late Robert J. Wheeler Jr. in St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold. Together they would have two children and make their home in Southold. After her husband’s passing in 1995, she moved to Oregon, and then, after her retirement, moved to Florida to care for her mother. Eventually she moved back to Long Island to be with her family in Aquebogue.

Linda worked as a secretary for Dr. Lloyd Simon’s medical office, and most recently, with AARP in Oregon where she retired from. She was a member of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold where she served as a confraternity instructor and Eucharistic minister.

Predeceased by her husband, Robert Jr., Linda is survived by her children, James C. Wheeler and Robert J. Wheeler III of Aquebogue; grandchild Aidan Wheeler; siblings Josephine LaVerdi of Aquebogue and Susan Darnell of Riverhead; and her nieces and nephews.

The family received friends April 6 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Funeral services were held April 7 at the funeral home. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
