Blotter: Lock boxes stolen from flower stand
CORRECTION
An item in last week’s police blotter misidentified the location of a restaurant whose owners filed a complaint about a former manager allegedly stealing customer credit card information. The restaurant is located in Southold.
On Sept. 23, the owner of a roadside flower stand reported that nearly $600 was stolen from lock boxes at stands on Middle Road in Peconic and Main Road in East Marion. The alleged thefts occurred three times — on Sept. 18, 20 and 21. The owner told police that whoever stole the money either had a generic key or picked the lock, because the lock box itself sustained no damage. There were no cameras in the area to document the incidents, authorities said.
• On Sept. 25, a Southold man reported the theft three days earlier of a “Harris/Walz” political sign from his yard. The Bay Haven Lane resident “stated that the sign is worth $80, but an internet inquiry showed political signs of a similar size cost $5,” according to a responding officer. Extra patrols in the area were requested.
• On Sept. 27, a Mattituck homeowner reported the theft of a safe from her basement. An unknown individual accessed the basement through a door. The homeowner told police she hadn’t opened the safe in a decade and does not believe there were any items of monetary value inside. An investigation is ongoing.
Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
