John D. Sinning Sr.

John D. Sinning Sr. of Southold, captain of Sundowner Charters in Orient Point, passed away at home Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025. He was 82 years old.
John was born Oct. 7, 1942, in Paterson, N.J., to Mildred (Thorwester) and Garret Sinning. He was one of five children. He was raised in Hawthorne, N.J., but spent his childhood summers in Southold. After high school, he attended the University of Miami in Florida.
On April 4, 1964, at Saint Anthony’s Church in Hawthorne, he married the love of his life, Joan Alizieri. Together, they had three children and moved their family to Southold full time in 1982.
In his professional career, John was the owner of Dillistin Lumber Company in Paterson until 1984. From there, he would go on to own and operate Sundowner Charters in Orient Point. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America–Bergen County and served as scoutmaster for many years. He was also a 40-year member of the Southold Fire Department’s Protection Engine Company.
Predeceased by his siblings Robert Sinning, Garret Sinning and Richard Sinning, John is survived by his wife, Joan; children John Sinning Jr. of Riverhead, Patricia Lund of Bridgehampton and Michael Sinning of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren John Sinning III (Emily), Nicole Sinning (Thomas), Sarah Perry (Ryan) and Hayley Lund (Connor); great-grandchildren Colton Sinning, Callahan Sinning, Charles Sinning and Theodore Loncar; sister Marybeth Poole of Los Angeles, Calif.; and relatives ToniAnn Sinning and Robert Spitzenberg.
The family received friends Sunday, Jan. 19, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where Firematic and funeral services followed.
