Janet Veronica Atkinson Moore
Janet Veronica Atkinson Moore, long time resident of Orient died July 18, 2026, days after her 86th birthday.
Janet was born in Queens and grew up in Oyster Bay, N.Y. She completed undergraduate studies at NYSU Oneonta and Hunter College. On March 25,1967, with snow flurries in the air, she married her husband, David Penny Moore, at St. Patrick’s Church in Glen Cove, N.Y. When her kids reached school age, she got a masters degree at Southampton College and served her students and fellow educators for over 12 years as a special education teacher at the Oysterponds Elementary School in Orient.
As well as volunteering with the League of Women Voters and Oysterponds Historical Society, Janet enjoyed learning new things: quilting, knitting and sports like tennis and golf. She loved hot tea, her crossword puzzle, her children and grandchildren, and their pets.
Janet is predeceased by her husband David Penny Moore, 2025; her sister Judith O’Connell (nee Atkinson), 2023; and her brother, Raymond Atkinson, 1984.
Janet is survived by daughter, Jennifer Moore Smith (Andrew) of Hastings-on-Hudson and Orient; and son, David Penny Moore Jr. (Charlotte Reece Moore) of Marblehead, Mass.; five grandchildren: Nathaniel Smith, Sage Smith, Vivian Smith, Maisie Moore, Reece Moore; and her cousin, Lois Atkinson.
No visitation of service will be held. Interment at Calverton National Cemetery together with husband David and where brother Raymond Atkinson is buried will occur July 29.
