Stephen Willets Latson

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Willets Latson, who died on July 25, 2026, at the age of 79.

Steve was a devoted conservationist, sports enthusiast, and a steady source of laughter, wisdom, and strength. He cherished lifelong friendships built on sincerity, humor, and unwavering loyalty. Above all, he was an extraordinary stepfather whose guidance, love, and example shaped the lives of those fortunate enough to call him “Pop.” He lived with integrity, a tireless work ethic, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

A lifelong North Fork bayman, Steve earned his living on the water and possessed a remarkable understanding of its tides, seasons, and wildlife—knowledge that could only come from a lifetime of sailing, working, and exploring the bays since childhood. His respect for the natural world was reflected in both his livelihood and his enduring commitment to conservation.

Sports were another lifelong passion. A collegiate lacrosse and football player at Johns Hopkins University, Steve carried the camaraderie, discipline, and joy of competition throughout his life, sharing his enthusiasm for the games he loved with family and friends.

Steve is survived by his brother, John Latson; his stepchildren, Erin Larsen, Matthew (Tisha) Larsen, and Elizabeth (Jasen) Craven; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwina G. Latson and Almet R. Latson.

A memorial service will be held at True Light Church in Southold on Friday, July 31, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Steve’s honor to Mashomack Preserve through The Nature Conservancy.
