Teen in pool tragedy identified as Mattituck senior Gavyn Drago as grieving family sets funeral services

The Mattituck teen who died Friday after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool has been identified as Gavyn Drago, a Mattituck High school senior.

“The Mattituck-Cutchogue community is in mourning over the tragic loss of high school senior Gavyn Drago,” the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District said in a Facebook post Sunday. “Our thoughts are with Gavyn’s family, his friends, and his classmates. We are presently working on supports for our students and staff on Tuesday and into the future.”

Southold Town police and Mattituck firefighters were called to the home on Bennetts Pond Lane just before 1 p.m. on Friday. The 17-year-old had already been pulled from the pool when first responders arrived and was not breathing, police said.

Crews immediately tried to revive him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

“The Greenport school community joins Mattituck-Cutchogue in mourning the heartbreaking loss of high school senior Gavyn Drago,” the district said on Facebook Sunday. “Our thoughts are with Gavyn’s family, classmates, teachers, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.”

The Mattituck Junior-Senior High School Athletic Booster Club also remembered Gavyn Sunday as “a friend, classmate, teammate” who was beginning his senior year and the start of the cross-country season.
